“That mysterious vital energy within the mind: One moment it arrives, the next it departs. So fine, there is nothing within it; so vast, there is nothing outside it. We lose it because of the harm caused by mental agitation.” – Unknown
A curiosity to unravel the mysteries of life evokes the mind to wander further from our perceived reality in search for meaning often bringing you to explore various less treaded roads one such path bringing you to the doorsteps of the Reiki.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, yet powerful form of healing offering beneficial, balancing and stress-reducing effects. As a natural healing system, it can benefit anyone from young children to adults and is a safe treatment. It can be used alongside other complementary therapies or conventional medicine. Reiki helps the body to reach an inner state of harmony, physically, mentally and spiritually. As well as helping many physical ailments, it can also promote weaning off any negative mental habits, turning these into more positive and productive thought patterns. Once we begin to think more positively, our lives and our health become more positive too.
The Universal Energy
The word “Reiki” is derived from the Japanese word “rei” refers to an all-encompassing energy that permeates all living and nonliving entities and guides the inherent functioning of the universe. The word “ki” refers to the non-physical energy that flows through everything that is alive, including plants, animals, and human beings—because of this, ki is also often called “life force energy,” and is known as qi or chi from other lineages. The combination of these two words is what defines reiki as “spiritually guided life-force energy.”
Who started it and how?
Dr. Mikao Usui is the founder of the Usui System of Reiki and had an interesting journey towards mindfulness and discovering Reiki the brief story of which being that the various life experiences of Mikao Usui inspired him to direct his attention toward discovering his purpose in life. In his search he came across the description of a special state of consciousness that once achieved would not only provide an understanding of one’s life purpose but would also guide one to achieve it. This special state is called An-shin Ritus-mei (pronounced on sheen dit sue may). In this special state, one is always at peace regardless of what is taking place in the outer world. And it is from this place of peace that one completes one’s life purpose. One of the special features of this state is that it maintains itself without any effort on the part of the individual; the experience of peace simply wells up spontaneously from within and is a type of enlightenment. Having understood this concept on an intellectual level he dedicated his life to achieve it; this is considered to be an important step in his spiritual path. He discovered that one path to An-shin Ritsu-mei is through the practice of Zazen meditation. So he found a Zen teacher who accepted him as a student and began to practice Zazen. After three years practice, he had not been successful and sought further guidance. His teacher suggested a more severe practice in which the student must be willing to die in order to achieve An-shin Ritsu-mei.
So with this in mind, he prepared for death and in February 1922, he went to Kurama Yama, a sacred mountain north of Kyoto. He went to fast and meditate until he passed to the next world. It must be kept in mind that he was not looking to discover a method of healing, but was seeking to experience this special spiritual state. In addition, there is a small waterfall on Kurama Yama where even today people go to meditate. This meditation involves standing under the waterfall and allowing the water to strike and flow over the top of the head, a practice that is said to activate the crown chakra. Japanese Reiki Masters think that Usui Sensei may have used this meditation as part of his practice. In any case, as time passed he became weaker and weaker. It was now March 1922 and at midnight of the twenty-first day, a powerful light suddenly entered his mind through the top of his head and he felt as if he had been struck by lightning; this made him unconscious.
As the sun rose, he awoke and realized that whereas before he had felt very weak and near death from his fasting, he was now filled with an extremely enjoyable state of vitality that he had never experienced before; a miraculous type of high-frequency spiritual energy had displaced his normal consciousness and replaced it with an amazing new level of awareness. He experienced himself as being the energy and consciousness of the Universe and that the special state of enlightenment he had sought had been given to him as a gift. He was overjoyed by this realization.
When this happened, he was filled with excitement and went running down the mountain to tell his Zen master of his great good fortune. On his way down he stubbed his toe on a rock and fell down and he placed his hands over the toe, which was in pain. As he did this, a healing energy began flowing from his hands all by itself. The pain in his toe went away and the toe was healed. Usui Sensei was amazed by this. He realized that in addition to the illuminating experience he had undergone, he had also received the gift of healing. He also understood that this was his life purpose; to be a healer and to train others. Thus started the beginning of Reiki as a healing system.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Life force flows through the physical body through chakras. It also emanates around us in an energy field called the aura. When this flow of energy is disrupted or blocked, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.
The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a low vibration in the flow of energy. This diminishes the functioning of the human body.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached.
Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which the universal energy is transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing.
An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an “attunement” given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life.
Reiki and Conventional Science
Often surrounding reika is an aura (pun intended ) of mysterious far out concepts and skepticism possibly due to the fact that energies just like faith are hard to prove existing with hard scientific facts and empirical evidence. It requires an receptive mind and a open heart chakra to embrace yourself to receive the subtle energies of the universe. Unlike science, it does not exist in black and white but rather exists on a transcendental level.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from a higher power many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.
Becoming a Reiki Practitioner Yourself
There are three levels of Reiki for which one must be attuned before becoming a master—starting with
Reiki Level 1: The First Degree
This level is all about learning the history of Reiki, proper hand placements, the basics of how to use Reiki on others, and the practice of self-Reiki, which encourages students to use the technique on themselves in order to work through personal hardships to ensure that the practitioner’s energy channel enabling him or her to connect to the universal life force energy, which flows from the cosmos through the crown of the head and into the heart and hands. This experience often causes many practitioners to report feeling sensations in their palms after the first attunement.
Level 2: Attunement
It involves learning all about, as well as how to draw, the major Reiki symbols. These sacred symbols are each associated with a specific healing frequency, such as power, emotional wellbeing, and balance. They are drawn in midair before a healing session begins to help practitioners focus their energy on the most relevant frequency for the person they are practicing on, and to help them connect more deeply to the universal energy.
Level 3 & Reiki Master
The Third Degree and Reiki Master training. Most practitioners will take the Level 3 and Master training at the same time, as they are often the same designation. The definition of a Reiki master is anyone who has received the master attunement and master symbol, understands how to give all the attunements, and has actually taught a Reiki class, thus demonstrating their ability to pass Reiki on to others. Those who have taken Reiki master training but haven’t taught at least one person would not qualify as Reiki masters but rather Third Degree practitioners—that’s the distinction between Third Degree and Reiki master. Becoming a master requires such a deep commitment to the practice, it’s important that one continually utilizes heir Reiki healing abilities, meditates on which spiritual path feels right for them, and spends significant time considering and selecting a master to learn from.
Reiki helps the body to reach an inner state of harmony, physically, mentally and spiritually. As well as helping many physical ailments, Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
